Lyophilization

Lyophilization is another word for freeze drying (or alternatively freeze drying is another word for lyophilization!). One way to look at it is to categorise freeze drying as the ‘nickname’ for the much more formal and scientific sounding ‘lyophilization’.

Don’t be confused, however, because the process is exactly the same. Product is frozen at low temperature in a high vacuum, and water/moisture is driven from the product to an ice condenser by way of sublimation.

To add to the confusion, lyophilization has two spelling variations: including ‘Z’ in the American spelling, and ‘S’ in the alternative spelling in the English language, (lyophilisation).
